I first became aware of Angus McBean (1904-1990) in the text book for a college course in Shakespeare I was taking at the University of Minnesota. His photos of the plays we were reading were inserted together in a special section. When the teacher droned on, I would look at the images over and over again. This picture was taken during rehearsals for "Gypsy" at the University of Arizona, under the able direction of department head Peter Marroney. The play is considered one of the best ever in musical theater. It is based on the memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee (1911-1970) when she, her mother Rose and little sister June, played vaudeville houses in the 1920's and early 1930's. The "talkies" ruined vaudeville and Rose launched a new career as a strip tease artist in burlesque.
The play starred that theatrical dynamo Ethel Merman (1908-1984). She was not considered box office so Rosalind Russell (1908-1976) played Mama Rose in the 1962 film, with Natalie Wood (1938-1981) playing Gypsy. As in "West Side Story" Natalie's singing voice was dubbed.
